Storage Solutions Ltd Environmental Commitment

Peter Sully, Managing Director, is personally committed to making sure that Storage Solutions environmental impact is minimal. Peter has a long history involving efficiency based projects and adds to this an interest in alternative energy which led him to design and build a medium sized, vertical axis wind turbine over 30 years ago.

Peter says that his interest has always been fired by a fascination with the technology and a belief that resources should be used efficiently rather than squandered. The spin off is good for the environment, something that we naturally applaud, often taking the most environmentally friendly option rather than the cheapest route.

Storage Solutions Manufacturing Operation

When Storage Solutions took over their plant in Torrington, Devon, it was clear that the environment had not been on the agenda for many years, and so immediate action was required. Even before production started the Carbon Trust were invited to do a full energy audit. This added some ideas into the pot, that was already on the boil, and changes began immediately; starting with the paint line and progressing through the factory.

Paint Line Pre-treatment

The paint line was converted to use a single cleaning and phosphating process at ambient temperature, rather than a multiple wash system that requires heat. This change removed an18Kw motor from the process and the chemical used allowed the small effluent to be passed straight to the normal drainage system. The fact that bowsers are no longer required to empty the tanks has saved the additional cost of chemicals as well as the cost of extra energy.

Paint Line Powder Coating and Curing Ovens

With the benefits of the change in pretreatment in place, action was taken to reduce the temperature required to cure the powder coating used in the factory. This process ran at 200 degrees and has been reduced to slightly under 160, this also allows the line to run at a higher speed. Operational changes have allowed through put to double, reducing emissions and gas use by more than half over all. A significant financial benefit for the business.

Overall the company has reduced consumption of electricity by about 60% and will continue with the challenges to be come greener as ever investment decision is made.
